The Chesterton golf team double-scheduled themselves on Saturday and turned in two solid performances with a third place finish at the Wawasee Invitational and a seventh at the Aberdeen Classic.

At Wawasee, the Trojans finished third by winning the tiebreaker over Homestead, Northwood and Lakeland with a 324 team score. No. 4-ranked Wawasee won the title (304) and Northridge was second (316).

“It was a brutal day weather-wise,” Chesterton coach John Sparks said. “It was a challenging day for everybody with the cold wind.”

Kyle Grassel led the Trojans with a 79, while Josh Kalita followed that with an 80. Ryan Grassel shot 81 and Pat Herrod fired an 84. Nick Stasil was the tiebreaker with his 85.

“We had some solid performances,” Sparks said. “Kyle continues to be really steady. Josh had a really good round of 80 and Pat Herrod is starting to get his game going after a slow start.”

The Trojans weren’t bothered by the weather as much as some other teams and can look to the up and down local weather as a reason.

“Dealing with that in a big tournament will help them down the road,” Sparks said. “We’re a team that gets outside any day we can. We’ve been through this weather before and I think that helped us.”
