Trojan girls split with Portage and Valparaiso

The Chesterton girls track team won just 5-of-16 events Tuesday night against archrival Valparaiso, but pushed the meet to the last event before falling 71-61.

The Trojans split on the night with a 100-32 victory over Portage.

“I felt like it was a team effort that kept us in the meet,” Chesterton coach Steve Kearney said. “Our number two and three people scored points for us and pushed the Valpo kids down. We had a chance to tie it going into the last event.

“That’s a good team effort.”

The Trojans dominated the jumps with a 1-2-3 finish in the long jump and a 1-2 finish in the high jump. Senior Katie McColly won the long jump (17-8), followed by Marissa Crafton (17-5 3/4) and Mallory Przybylinski (17-0 3/4).

“We had a great effort by the long jumpers,” Kearney said. “How many teams have three kids that go 17 feet? And that’s without Megan (Erminger).”

Senior Chrissy Watts and junior Rachel Crawford tied for top honors in the high jump by clearing 5 feet.

The Trojans also got victories from Tina Guidarelli in the 800 (2:31.92) and Aris Ringas in the discus (92-11).

“Tina ran a great 800 after a nice 1,600,” Kearney said. “That’s a nice double for her. Aris Ringas winning the discus was good too.”

The other winner for the Trojans was the 4x100 as the quartet of Bailey Huddleston, Przybylinski, Becky Lewis and McColly won in 52.20. McColly held off a hard-charging Viking in the final five meters.

“The 4x100 ran pretty well,” Kearney said. “Katie (McColly) had a nice day. She held off a runner at the end and just got edged out a couple of other times.”

Brianne Guardiola picked up two second place finishes with runs in the 100 hurdles (16.72) and the 300 hurdles (50.08).

“I thought Brianne and Kirstyn (Nallenweg) both ran well in the hurdles,” Kearney said. “Milana Socha had two nice races as well. All our distance kids did a pretty good job.”

The Trojans return to the track on Saturday when they head to the West Lafayette Relays beginning at 9 a.m.
