It’s been a while.

The Chesterton girls basketball team exorcised a demon on Friday night in picking up a 58-18 Duneland Athletic Conference victory at Merrillville.

It was the first Trojan victory over the Pirates since Feb. 11, 2011. Merrillville had won nine straight games against Chesterton.

“We’ve been on the other side of that many times,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said.

The Pirates started the night with the game’s first four points as the Trojans needed over three minutes to crack the scoreboard.

“We turned the ball over in the first half that were unforced,” Campbell said. “We’ve got to make some better decisions, but that’s basketball.”

Once the Trojans entered the scoring column, they ran off 12 straight points to finish the first corner. The lead grew to 18-4 before the Pirates scored their only points of the second quarter.

Another 6-0 run put Chesterton on top 24-6 at halftime.

“We didn’t shoot it great, but we turned them over,” Campbell said of forcing 45 Merrillville turnovers. “Eventually that wears on the other team when you put constant pressure on like that. We made some shots to start the second half and put it away.”

Another 16-0 run in the third quarter pushed the lead to 44-10 as Courtney Krol scored 10 points in the stretch on her way to a game-high 19 points.

Sarah Dzierba added 13 points with Hailey Vale scoring eight points and Kelly Carr garnering six points.

Chesterton held Merrillville to just 8-of-37 shooting (21 percent) from the field, including 0-for-6 from 3-point range.

“The effort on defense is always there for us,” Campbell said. “You have to treat every game like ‘this is what we do and we have to do it better’. If you do that, things tend to take care of themselves.”

The Trojans return to the court on Tuesday when they host Hobart in a girls/boys doubleheader. The varsity girls game is set for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
