The Chesterton girls basketball team forced 36 turnovers, but had to hang on to beat South Central 51-45 Friday night.

“It’s one of those games where you’re just happy to come out on the winning side,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. “You would think by causing that many turnovers, you’d be a lot further ahead.”

The Trojans scored the game’s first 10 points as they forced six turnovers before the Satellites scored their first basket. CHS led 14-4 after one period.

“South Central is good and they figured out things and made some nice adjustments after the first quarter,” Campbell said. “Can you hang on long enough? We did.”

The lead grew to 22-8 as Jocelyn Lipscomb and McKenzie Sullivan hit triples. A 5-0 run by South Central to finish the half put the Trojans on top 25-15 at the break.

Chesterton’s lead continued to grow in the third quarter, 37-21, as Sarah Richards scored five of her 10 points in the frame.

“With the nature of what we run offensively, after we made a couple of 3’s, the lanes to the basket were open for Sarah,” Campbell said.

South Central would cut the lead to 41-36 with a 9-0 run in the fourth quarter before Caroline Puntillo put the finishing touches on the win with a 6-0 run. Puntillo scored a game-high 20 points.

“Caroline is that type of player,” Campbell said. “She makes big plays for us and has not only this year, but her whole career.”

Both teams hit on 17-of-37 shots (46 percent) from the field, but the Trojans’ struggles at the foul line (14-for-24) kept the game close.

“It still boils down to shooting,” Campbell said. “Whether its from the field or the free throw line, you have to make shots.”
