golf coach Dale Hewitt couldn’t have written a better script for the 2015
And this weekend’s
final chapter gave the Trojans the school’s best-ever finish at the IHSAA
State Finals as they finished third overall.
“We wanted to win
DAC, Sectional and knew we had a chance to win the Regional,” Hewitt said.
“(Winning) Regional was like icing on the cake because we’d never done it
before. Finishing third (at State) is more than I could have imagined when
the year started.”
The Trojans were
tied for fifth after the opening day on Friday at Prairie View Golf Club in
“There were 10
teams after the first day that were all right there,” Hewitt said. “Play
conservative on the second day because of the weather and stay away from the
big number. That was our plan.”
continued to fight the field and the weather and fought their way to a third
place team score of 692 behind State Champion Evansville North (651) and
“It was just brutal
conditions,” Hewitt said. “It was really cold, really windy. I like to play
and I wouldn’t have played on a day like that.”
Chesterton was one
of the first team’s off the course on Saturday and then it was just a matter
of watching the scoreboard.
“It was incredible
watching the numbers get posted,” Hewitt said. “Our goal was to get to the
medal stand (top 4). We were one of the first teams in. It was pretty cool
as numbers got put up. We were seventh. Then we were sixth. All of a sudden,
we were in third and everybody was in.”
The Trojans were
led by Elyse Stasil with a 170 team score, including an 81 on Saturday.
Senior Grace Davis shot 172 for the weekend with a solid 84 on Saturday.
played great on the second day and so did Grace to come in with a lower
score than Friday,” Hewitt said. “We didn’t do anything exceptional, we just
played really tough and gutted it out. You can’t worry about anybody going
crazy low. It was just avoiding big numbers.”
Cara Kroeger shot
174 and Andrea Hanas backed that up with a 176. Lexy Hanas rounded out the
scoring with a 207.
“All year we’ve
talked about it being a team effort,” Hewitt said. “If we could get four
scores in the 80’s both days, we’d be fine. We didn’t have anything super
low, just four solid courses. That’s what we’ve done all year. That’s been
our formula all year.”
Davis was the lone
senior on the Trojans as they look ahead to 2016.
All-State honors,” Hewitt said. “It’ll be hard to replace her, she’s been so
good for us for four years.”
Alexis Miestowski won the individual state title with a 145 total score that
included a 76 on Friday and three-under-par 69 on Saturday.
