The Chesterton boys
tennis team dropped a 3-2 decision to Valparaiso in the Finals of the IHSAA
Portage Sectional on Wednesday.
“I told the boys
after the match that this one loss doesn’t define what all they have done
for this program,” Chesterton coach Tom Bour said. “We didn’t get it done
this time around and Valpo deserves so much credit. We can keep our heads up
knowing that it sure wasn’t because of a lack of effort.”
Luke Liapes was the
lone singles winner for the Trojans with a 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 win over Calvin
McMurtrey at No. 1. Drew Engels and James Navarro got the other team point
with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles over Calvin VanBenthuysen and Zach
“We graduate 11
seniors, five of which are on the varsity,” Bour said. “I can only hope that
all of those guys know how much they have done for this program and how much
they have done for me as a coach.”
