If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing better than anybody’s ever done it before.

The Chesterton boys swim team picked up its 14th consecutive Duneland Athletic Conference title, breaking the record of 13 straight set by Portage Wrestling, on Saturday at LaPorte High School.

“I talked to the kids earlier this week and said take 14 years off of your age and that’s when we started this,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel said. “Actually, it all started right here in LaPorte. It’s fitting that we broke the record here.

“This wasn’t just for our team, it was for all the teams before us.”

The Trojans scored 459 points to outdistance Crown Point (350), Lake Central (324), Valparaiso (280), Michigan City (226), Portage (188), LaPorte (177) and Merrillville (99).

“We’ve been trying to get through to them how important this streak is,” Kinel said. “A lot of our conference meets have been kind of ho hum. After Thursday night, we needed a little spark and the guys responded.”

Chesterton opened the day with a victory in the 200 Medley Relay as Kyle Whitaker, Nick Brahos, Nate Schuster and Matt Rosiecki won in 1:39.39.

“This is what we were aiming for,” Whitaker said. “We were definitely energized and swam great today. It’s great to be a part of history. This was for the sweat and blood of the guys from the last 13 teams.

“We weren’t going to let them down.”

Whitaker went right back to work in the 200 Free and set a meet record with his time of 1:40.99.

“Kyle is on a different planet,” Kinel said. “He chases records and that’s what we expect out of him because he always does it. You can’t say enough about him.”

Whitaker also set the record in the 100 Fly later in the meet.

“The goal and motivation for the conference meet every year is to better the record in any event,” Whitaker said. “But, everybody swam great up and down the lineup today.”

Tyler Fozkos won the 50 Free title with a one-second victory (21.54) over Crown Point’s Marcus Trybula. Fozkos also won the 100 Free (48.07).

“We had best times up and down the line and won some close races,” Kinel said. “We’re elated. We swam great.”

The Trojans put the finishing touches on the victory with wins in the 200 and 400 Free Relays. In the 200, the quartet of Rosiecki, Taylor Zakhar, Joe Gerard and Fozkos won in 1:29.01.

In the 400, Fozkos, Zakhar, Schuster and Whitaker won in 3:16.50.

“We had some incredible swims today,” Kinel said. “You win these championships on depth.”

Those swims came from the same guys that Kinel knows he’ll need as the Trojans pursue a third straight state championship.

“Chris McGue’s 200 and 500 Free dropped a ton of time and were great swims,” Kinel said. “Matt Rosiecki had two season best times. Nate Schuster’s 500 Free under 5 minutes is a great swim. Jake Brehmer in diving was awesome. Sean Miller going 58 in the backstroke was out of sight.

“Our second and third line guys really stepped up today.”
