The Chesterton boys tennis team fell 3-1 to Valparaiso in the championship match of the IHSAA Portage Sectional on Thursday.

“You have to hand it to Valparaiso,” Chesterton coach Tom Bour said. “They played outstanding and withstood every run we threw at them. Their quick start in 4-of-the-5 matches really took the fire out of our guys.”

The lone winner for the Trojans was Fabio Haiduc with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Wil Behrend at No. 1 singles. Troy Feller’s match at No. 3 singles was cancelled at No. 3 singles due to rain in the third set.

Haiduc’s victory advances him in the individual portion of the IHSAA State Tournament.

“The boys won 13 matches this season and went undefeated in the conference,” Bour said. “We have a lot to be proud of.”
