It wasn’t always pretty, but it was enough.

The Trojans used an 11-0 run midway through the first quarter to take control against Gary Roosevelt and pick up a 60-37 non-conference victory on Friday night.

“It wasn’t pretty, no doubt about that,” Chesterton coach Mar Urban said. “But, we still found a way to win a basketball game. We’re 4-0 on this first home stretch.”

The Trojans trailed 8-4 early on before an 11-0 run led to a 17-9 lead after one quarter. Gary Roosevelt scored just one basket in the second quarter as the lead grew to 25-12 at the break.

“We were trying to pressure them,” Urban said. “It’s early in the season and I wanted to see if we could get out and guard some quick guards. We got a split a couple of times, but held them under 40 points.”

An 11-2 run to open the third quarter pushed the lead to 36-26 and another 11-0 run to start the fourth quarter put any thoughts of a comeback away.

“I really thought we were doing the right things,” Urban said. “We had to play through some contact and make some free throws and then finally in the fourth quarter we put a run together to put the game away.”

Jake Wadding led the Trojans with 16 points, while Tyler Nelson and Drew Vanderwoude each added 10 points.

“It was good to have Tyler back,” Urban said. “You bring a kid with the leadership and experience that he has, it can only help. It’s great to have him back and he’s way ahead of schedule.”

Rounding out the scoring were Travis Grayson (8 points), Jack Eaton (7 points), Kolton Cardenas (3 points), Nick Mullen (3 points) and Jake Warren (1 point).

Chesterton returns to the court on Tuesday when they head to East Chicago Central. The JV game is set for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
