Steve Kearney awarded Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship

The Chesterton-Porter Rotary Club recently presented Coach Steve Kearney with Rotary's highest honor, the Paul Harris Fellowship.

Kearney graduated from Chesterton High School in 1966 and received his undergraduate degree from Ball State University in 1970. He went on to complete his graduate degree in education through Purdue University Calumet.

The year Steve graduated from Ball State he started working with the Duneland Schools. He has been with the system for the last 44 years in the Math Department, and retired this year.

In 1970 when the running craze was sweeping the nation Kearney had already been a fixture in the running community in Indiana for years. He has long been a coach with the Calumet Region Junior Striders running program, which he helped to form, nurture and grow into one of Northwest Indiana's premier running clubs.

Kearney has coached a total of 45 years at Chesterton in both track and cross country.

In Boys Cross Country his teams achieved one Regional title, one Semi State title, two team state finalists, and two all state runners. In Girls Cross Country his team was a State runner up, he had six state team finalists, seven all state runners. He had seven teams in the top ten in the state in 1987 and 1998-2001.

In Girls Track Kearney's teams had 11 sectional titles, three regional titles, Top 10 in the state five years in a row from 2002-2006, he was a six time nominee for Coach of the Year and had 17 all state runners. In the 4 X 800 he had nine state qualifiers, five top nine finishes, three state championships, three state records and one state runner up.

In 2015 Coach Kearney is being inducted into the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame.
