State appearances by Cross Country and golf teams highlight 2009 CHS Fall Sports Awards

The 2009 fall sports season came to a close at Chesterton High School on Wednesday night with the presentation of the Fall Sports Awards in the CHS Auditorium.

The fall season was highlighted by a pair of State Finals appearances for the Trojans.

The Girls Golf team won another Sectional title and advanced through the Regional to the State Finals for the second consecutive year, while the Boys Cross Country team finished runner-up to Columbus North last Saturday.

The second place finish marked the top CHS finish ever at the State Boys Cross Country Meet. Individually, senior David Osborn finished fourth overall and also won the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award.

The other Sectional title for the fall sports came in Boys Soccer.

Student-athletes in nine sports were recognized for their accomplishments, including 11 Most Valuable Players and 156 Scholar-Athletes.

David Osborn won his third consecutive MVP Award in Boys Cross Country, while Milana Socha (Girls Cross Country) and Cole Galloway (Boys Soccer) won for the second consecutive year.

Other MVP’s included Alec Houpt (Boys Soccer), Mark Gore (Boys Soccer), Kelly Grassel (Girls Golf), Courtney Dyer (Cheerleading), Lauren Seawright (Girls Soccer), Scott Homner (Boys Tennis), Jon Watson (Football) and Michelle Fekete (Volleyball).

Mental Attitude Award winners included Shane Kenney (Boys Cross Country), Brandon Garvey (Boys Soccer), Molly Stauffer (Girls Cross Country), Erin DeVaney (Girls Golf), Abby Davis (Cheerleading), Abby Miller (Girls Soccer), Ben Mullin (Boys Tennis), Greg Nowak (Football) and Lindsey Hutnick (Volleyball).

The Sportsmanship Awards went to Tyler Rusboldt (Boys Cross Country), Ben Molnar (Boys Soccer), Haley Virden (Girls Cross Country), Marissa Kroeger (Girls Golf), Giselle Uzzardo (Cheerleading), Allison Smith (Cheerleading), Annie Thieling (Girls Soccer), Justin Marshall (Boys Tennis), Andrew Brack (Football) and Kathleen Maple (Volleyball).

Most Improved Awards went to Ryan Cutter (Boys Cross Country), Andrew Morris (Boys Cross Country), Austin Haire (Boys Soccer), Kristen Stapay (Girls Cross Country), Emily DeLache (Girls Golf), Ashley Ford (Girls Golf), Emily Tezak (Cheerleading), Rosie Biehl (Girls Soccer), Angelina Greco (Girls Soccer), Ryan Tarnowski (Boys Tennis), Justin Jenks (Football) and Colleen DeHenes (Volleyball).

Other special awards presented went to Manny Orlich (Most Consistent in Boys Cross Country), Jordan Hoover (Leonard Tengblad Award in Boys Cross Country), David Osborn (Larry James Award in Boys Cross Country), Jon Rogers (Steve Kearney “Stride On” Award in Boys Cross Country), Melonie Buckmaster (Most Consistent in Girls Cross Country), Milana Socha (Leonard Tengblad Award and Larry James Award in Girls Cross Country), Liz Koch (Kate Pokorny Spirit Award in Girls Soccer), Amanda Kollar (Offensive MVP in Girls Soccer), Megan Behrendt (Defensive MVP in Girls Soccer), Claire Holba (Offensive MVP in Volleyball) and Jessica Peterson (Defensive MVP in Volleyball).
