Mallory Przybylinski is no stranger to success.

Not only has she earned state medals in swimming, she appears primed to take a shot at some more hardware in track after taking home the 200 title at Tuesday night’s Duneland Athletic Conference Meet.

“Mallory was probably the surprise winner out of all the events,” Chesterton coach Steve Kearney said. “She’s getting healthier finally. Mallory’s had a great career. She got to sit in the wings and watch some great runners. Now she’s doing what they did.

“She’s living proof that you don’t have to specialize. If you learn how to compete, that’s better than the one-tenth better you might be if you focus on just one thing.”

Lake Central took the team title with 146 points, while Valparaiso (115), Merrillville (84) and Chesterton (78) followed.

“We outscored our seeds,” Kearney said. “You know your foe and you know how to race them at this point in the year. We had some kids really come through.”

The Trojans got second place finishes from Katie Behrendt in the 400 (1:00.45) and Marissa Crafton in the long jump (18-feet).

“Katie Behrendt had two unbelievable races,” Kearney said. “Marissa really had a great meet too.”

Crafton also finished eighth in the 200 and was the anchor leg of the runner-up 4x100 squad, while Behrendt was the anchor of the second place 4x400.

“In the 4x1, there are three kids (Bailey Huddleston, Przybylinski, Megan Erminger) that have run that race for us for a couple years now and they’re ready to go fast,” Kearney said. “Throw Marissa in there at the end with how great a day she was having and you get a great race.

“In the 4x4, they (Tori Schroeder, Przybylinski, Shauna Foor, Behrendt) are getting there. I love that race and the way they run it.”

The Trojans finished third in the 4x800 to start the day with the quartet of Jamie Norgaard, Riley Trella, Tina Guidarelli and Jenna Norgaard running a 10:03.50.

“We got a little shell-shocked in the mile and two mile today, but our 800 kids really stepped up for us,” Kearney said. “Those kids really did a good job in the 4x800 too.”

Other point scorers for Chesterton included Erminger (6th in 100, 4th in long jump), Foor (7th in 400), Jenna Norgaard (5th in 800), Schroeder (7th in 800), Macenzie Schoenfelt (8th in 100 hurdles), Megan Behrendt (4th in 300 hurdles), Elaina Gerlach (7th in high jump), Kelley Freeman (5th in pole vault) and Michelle Richtsteig (7th in pole vault).
