Chesterton’s David Osborn was happy with his fourth place individual
performance and his team’s second place overall finish at the IHSAA Boys
Cross Country State Finals on Saturday in Terre Haute.
Everything else is gravy.
Osborn was named the winner of the Charles F. Maas Mental Attitude Award
that is presented annually by the IHSAA Executive Committee to the senior
who best demonstrates mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic
ability during his four years of high school.
“It’s a great feeling,” Osborn said. “When you look at the past winners,
when you win this, it puts you in great company. It’s really an honor.”
Osborn is a three-time All-State selection and ranks in the top 50 of his
senior class, while serving as Vice President of the National Honor Society.
Osborn is the son of Ted and Carolyn Osborn and plans to major in chemical
engineering, but hasn’t made a college choice yet.
“You’re standing there just listening and all you can do is just hope they
give it to him,” Ray said. “To hear his name announced is quite a thrill for
me just to have been a little part of it. It couldn’t have happened to a
nicer kid of a nicer family.”
Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance presented a $1,000 scholarship to Chesterton
High School in the name of Osborn.
