In football its obvious. In basketball too.

But in swimming, the casual fan never sees the strategy involved in a victory.

Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel has done it so many times, it almost seems “old hat” for him and the 4th-ranked Trojan girls swim team used it again for a 100-86 victory over No. 7 Crown Point on Tuesday night.

“The changes we made in the second half of the meet helped us,” Kinel said. “You can try to strategize and things, but if the kids don’t execute it, it doesn’t matter. There was nobody you could point to tonight, it was the whole team. Everybody stepped up and had a great night.

“Crown Point’s a great team and we always have great meets with them.”

Chesterton battled their way to a 34-32 lead through the first four events and trailed by just four points after CP’s Ashley Holland won the 1-Meter Diving event.

“What I’m excited about is that we rose to the occasion and swam some really good times,” Kinel said.

“We talked about the meet ahead of time and everyone knew what they had to do.”

A 2-3-4 finish by the Trojans in the 100 Fly seemed to set off the chain of events that propelled them to the victory.

“Stephanie Krause going 1:00.7 in the Fly was great,” Kinel said. “She just continues to get better and better. Kaylee Slont finishing third and Erin Socha sticking her fingers in to touch out and getting fourth was really big for us in the 100 Fly.”

That momentum carried over immediately.

“Then in the very next event (100 Free), Mae Bass did the exact same thing to finish fourth and score big points for us,” Kinel said.

The Trojans got double individual victories from Julia Campbell (200 Free, 500 Free) and Olivia Kabacinski (50 Free, 100 Breast).

“Crown Point’s top kids are so good that we didn’t win a lot of events,” Kinel said. “We knew it was going to come down to our depth. One of the things I’m excited about is that we won just about all the close races.

“We’ve really been working on finishing races and touching out at the end, so it’s nice to see something we’ve been working hard on come through.”

The only other victory for Chesterton came in the 400 Free Relay with the quartet of Campbell, Madisyn Coudriet, Kate Curley and Kabacinski winning in 3:39.61.
