No. 3 CHS Boys Soccer survives Crown Point

The No. 3 ranked Chesterton boys soccer team survived a scare and came away with a Duneland Athletic Conference victory at Crown Point in penalty kicks on Wednesday night.

“That’s the most exhilarating win we have had this year,” Chesterton coach Lucas Sabedra said. “A lot of the game was a back and forth battle. It was a great one to watch from the sidelines.”

The Trojans trailed 1-0 at halftime, but Jacob Perkins made a perfect pass to Josh Wadowski for the game tying goal. Charlie Eaton would make six saves in regulation to force the overtime.

“I thought our boys did a great job of keeping our composure,” Sabedra said. “I love to see them respond like that.”

After no one scored in overtime, the game went to penalty kicks. Eaton made a big save for the Trojans and it came down to Matt Marmolejo as Chesterton’s fifth kicker.

“His shot hit the bottom of the crossbar,” Sabedra said. “It bounced down off the ground and bounced back up and into the back of the net. Everybody’s heart skipped a beat.”

Marmolejo’s goal came after a perfect round of conversions from Nick Biel, Zack Bowser, Ryan O’Dell and Tommy Oros.

“I have a love/hate relationship with a PK shootout,” Sabedra said with a laugh. Hate to lose them, but love to win them!”

The Trojans return to the field twice on Saturday as they host Northridge in a varsity game at 12:30 and then play Highland in a JV/Varsity doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
