Long awaited first day finally comes for local sports

It sure seemed like a long wait.

The Chesterton Trojans finally “officially” returned to practice on Monday and it felt different.

“It was good to walk around campus and see kids again,” CHS Athletic Director Jeff Hamstra said. “It was nice to hear coaches coaching and see kids playing. I’m ecstatic that things are started.”

Monday marked the first official day of practice at CHS for boys and girls cross country, football, boys soccer, boys tennis and volleyball.

Girls golf started practice last Friday and will be the first sport to compete when they head to BattleGround Golf Club today for the Lafayette Jeff Invitational. Girls Soccer will begin its season on Thursday.

“Today was really good,” CHS Volleyball coach Amber McCaw said. “It was great to have everybody back in the gym.”

But, it was a long time coming.

“Now that we are finally here, I think it’s surreal,” McCaw said. “Nobody was sure if we would ever get to this point.”

Football coach Mark Peterson agreed.

“There was always a point where everybody was unsure if today was going to come,” Peterson said. “Make the most of today and plan for tomorrow. It’s good to be able to play football again.”

And the excitement in the players was noticeable as well.

“We’re just excited to be in the gym,” McCaw said. “There is a definite sense that people are grateful to be back in the gym. As a coach, that’s exciting.”

“It was exciting and the kids were full of energy,” Peterson said. “It was nice seeing kids out running around.”

It wasn’t the same first day that long-time coaches were used to, but it didn’t feel brand new either.

“We did all the same things we did over the summer from a protocol standpoint,” Peterson said.

“Our kids and coaches have been following the protocol for a month now and are pretty comfortable with what’s going on,” Hamstra said. “It’s old hat now and they’ve done a fantastic job.”
