Yes, there is Ice Hockey in Northwest Indiana.
PHC (Indians) High School Hockey is a non-profit hockey club that plays in
the Illiana High School Hockey League with home games and Illiana League
games at the Midwest Training and Ice Center located at 106th and White Oaks
Drive in St. John, Indiana.
The PHC Indians play away games in Ft. Wayne, South Bend, Indianapolis and
Chicago’s south suburbs. The High School hockey season begins September 1
and ends March 15 with optional spring hockey from March 15 through June 1.
PHC Indians Hockey Club is dedicated to developing kids with or without
experience. Approximately 50 percent of the players have never played
organized hockey before their 8th grade or freshman year of high school.
Many of the first time players have progressed to Varsity level players
before their Junior year of High School. The dedication to teaching and
developing new players has made the PHC Indians one of the most successful
teams in the State in regards to number of participants.
The PHC Indians have maintained approximately 30 club members supporting
both a Varsity and Midget/JV team for the last three years. Currently the
team has high school players from Chesterton H.S. (16), Portage H.S. (7),
Hobart H.S. (3), Michigan City area (1), Wheatfield Area (1) and Lansing
Area (1).
PHC Hockey plans to expand the program to include kids in 6th, 7th and 8th
grade with a developmental Bantam team in 2010 in addition to the High
School Varsity and Midget/JV Teams. The Bantam team will allow first time
players and limited experience players to enjoy the sport in 6th, 7th and
8th grade with approximately 24 practices and 12 games at a season cost of
$550.
The Club also allows more experienced 8th grade players to play with the PHC
Midget/JV Team.
The PHC Indians welcome all interested players from all of Porter County,
Hobart High School District, Jasper County and LaPorte County. The team is
looking for players to participate in the Spring hockey season by attending
(10) practice/scrimmage sessions which begin March 17 at a total cost of
approximately $140.
