The Chesterton softball team erupted for five runs in the eighth inning to
pick up a 6-1 Duneland Athletic Conference victory at Portage.
“Not exactly our best night hitting for the first five innings, but the
girls kept fighting,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “The defense did
a good job and we only allowed five base runners.”
The Trojans started the scoring in the top of the first with a leadoff home
run from Mallory McKee. The Indians tied the score on a home run of their
own in the third.
The offense got rolling in the eighth as McKee led off with a rocket to
right field that got misplayed and landed her on third base. Shelby Carter
slapped a ball to third base that also got misplayed and McKee scored.
Sydney Cooley reached on an error and Carter scored ahead of walks to Megan
Matheny and Megan Tymorek. Jill Bohnert singled to plate Cooley and Matheny.
Courtesy runner Bailey Slivka went to third on Bohnert’s single and scored
on Sierra LaFreniere’s single.
“In the sixth and seventh, we started putting the ball in play better,”
Hopson said. “We left runners on second and third in the seventh. In the
eighth, Portage had the three errors but we started hitting the ball hard
and put some pressure on them.”
Tymorek went the distance in the circle en route to the victory. The senior
allowed five hits and struck out six in the win.
“Megan (Tymorek) and Megan (Matheny) worked a good game tonight,” Hopson
Chesterton returns to the field on Thursday when they host Valparaiso with
the first pitch starting at 4:30 p.m.
