The Duneland Education Foundation is hosting the 2nd Annual Larry James Cross Country Classic trail race on Sunday, June 21. The race is named in memory of Larry James, the former cross country coach at CHS.

This year’s race will be combining the best features of two local races, The Bride of Zoy and the Larry James 5K Cross Country Classic. Two trail races, a 15K rugged race and a 5K fun run, are being offered and run through Cowles Bog, the Calumet Trail and Lake Michigan ridges and shoreline.

For registrations received by June 10, the entry fee is $15 and included a t-shirt. For those received after June 10, the fee is $20 and a shirt is not guaranteed.

Race day registration begin at 7 a.m. CST in the West lot of the Dune Park Train Station. The station is located at the corner of US Hwy 12 and Indiana 49 in Chesterton.

The 15K race begins at 8 a.m. and the 5K begins at 8:10 a.m. Computerized timing will be provided, with results posted after the race at www.thtiming.com

Awards will be provided to the top three finishers in each division of the 15K race. The top three male and female finishers of the 5K race will also receive awards.

First place awards will be give to each of the team division sin both male and female. There are 12 age group divisions and three team divisions, including middle school (6-8 grade), high school (9-12 grade) and adult (19 year and older).

In addition to running the race, there are other opportunities for community members to support the race and the Duneland Education Foundation. Corporate sponsorships, ranging from $500-$2500, provide the option of sponsoring the t-shirts, starting and finish lines, registration, post race food, computer timing and course.

In addition, runners may purchase naming rights to a one mile portion of the course for $25 and run the race free of charge.

The Duneland Education Foundation has awarded over $110,000 in just 14 years to educators in the Duneland School Corporation and St. Patrick School. Without the community’s continued support of the annual fundraising event, the projects implemented by teachers and experienced by students would not have occurred.
