Both offenses were in full display Monday afternoon at Chesterton High
School, but the Portage Indians came up with more big hits.
The Indians handed the Chesterton softball team its second straight Duneland
Athletic Conference loss 13-9.
“We didn’t come up with runs after their big innings,” Chesterton coach
LouAnn Hopson said. “If nothing else, get a run or two and you can take a
Haley Hodges hit a solo home run in the top of the first for a 1-0 led, but
the Trojans answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame.
Mallory McKee and Shelby Carter got leadoff singles and Sydney Cooley
reached on an error to load the bases. Amanda Dujmovich’s single scored
McKee and Carter.
Jill Bohnert’s fielder’s choice put the Trojans on top 3-1.
The Indians pounded out four doubles in the third inning on their way to six
runs and answered that rally themselves with three more runs in the fourth
for a 10-3 lead.
Megan Matheny’s RBI single in the fourth scored McKee to cut the Indians’
lead to 10-4.
Another three runs for Portage in the fifth set up one final charge for the
Trojans in the seventh.
Matheny reached on an error to start the frame and Cooley followed with a
single. Dujmovich’s single to center loaded the bases before a Megan Tymorek
grand slam to center field cut the lead to 13-8.
Sarah Richards singled to right field with one out and moved to second on an
error. McKee’s single to left plated Richards, but it was too little, too

Chesterton 2, Portage 1 (13 innings)
The Chesterton junior varsity softball team outlasted Portage in a 2-1
victory in 13 innings on Monday.
Lia Lombardini pitched all 13 innings for the Trojans and struck out five in
picking up the win.
Britta Johnson scored the Trojans’ first run after getting a single to start
the third inning. After moving to second on a bunt from Natalie Anderson and
third on a single by Becky Rizer, Johnson scored on Shelby Price’s fielder’s
Lombardini doubled in the bottom of the 13th and scored on Nicole Bross’
single up the middle for the game-winner.
