The game took shape
in the first inning.
The Portage Indians
hit a two-run home run in the top of the first and the Chesterton Trojans
left two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the inning.
That was the story
of the night as Portage escaped with a 5-3 Duneland Athletic Conference
victory on Thursday.
“We had plenty of
opportunities,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “We just didn’t get the
job done at the plate.”
After a leadoff
double by Portage’s Kaitlin Doud, Sydney Coundiff pounded a home run to deep
centerfield. Chesterton starter Sydney Cooley struck out two of the next
three hitters and allowed just six hits on the night.
Mallory McKee led
off the bottom of the first with a double to right field. A single by Sarah
Richards followed. McKee moved to third on a fielder’s choice off of
strikeout, Jill Bohnert singled to right field. Courtesy runner Becky Rizer
stole second, but Portage starter Kiley Jones got a strikeout to end the
“We’ve been talking
to the kids about being more aggressive,” Hopson said. “I think we were
looking for the perfect pitch instead of just making three good cuts.”
Hailey Perez led
off the second with a solo home run, but the Trojans answered when McKee’s
sacrifice fly plated Alexa Olson who led off the inning with a single.
The game remained
3-2 until the Indians scored an unearned run in the fourth and added a solo
home run off the bat of Dalton Minor in the seventh.
“Sydney kept us in
the game,” Hopson said. “They only had six hits, but three were home runs.”
The Trojans tried
to mount a rally in the seventh as Richards reached on an error and Cooley
followed with a single to put runners on the corners with no outs. A
strikeout was followed by a fielder’s choice that scored Richards.
A ground out ended
the rally and the game.
