One shot.

Every golfer has said that phrase. The member of the Chesterton girls golf team are merely the latest to do it.

The Trojans shot a 333-team score on Saturday at the Legends Golf Course in Franklin, Ind., during the opening round of the IHSAA State Finals only to be one shot away from making it to day two.

“It’s a tough way for it to turn out,” Chesterton coach Dale Hewitt said. “I knew we were on the bubble.”

After Allyse Kotso tapped in her par putt on the 18th green, the Trojans could only sit and wait for Penn and Carmel to finish their rounds. The Kingsmen and Greyhounds shot the exact number (332) they had too.

“It’s a little bittersweet,” Hewitt said. “We did better than I expected because we weren’t even supposed to be in this position.”

Kotso led the Trojans with a four-over-par 76 that qualified her to reach the second day. On Saturday, she fired another 76 and finished tied for 10th overall.

“I really just didn’t want to not play on Saturday,” Kotso said. “My biggest fear was missing the cut.”

Kotso’s 10th place finish is the highest individual result in CHS girls golf history.

“Allyse played well with a pair of 76s,” Hewitt said. “She’s been a very solid player for us. It’s neat to see how hard she worked both days to shoot a good score. It was fun to watch her.”

Kotso was followed by Erin DeVaney (80), Raine Fox (88), Jessica O’Brien (89) and Hayley Miller (90).

“I knew if we put it all together we had a chance,” Hewitt said. “I’m really proud of them.”

The 10th place finish is just another highlight for the Chesterton golf team. The Trojans finished the year 10-1 overall in dual meets.

“It was another record-breaking season for us,” Hewitt said. “We won the DAC Tournament. We won another Sectional title. It’s been a progression the last five or six years, but we kept taking another step and another step.”

And there is still one more to go.

“I think we’ve set ourselves up to compete for that spot again next year,” Hewitt said. “That’s what our expectation level will be when we start next fall.”
