When you go cold, sometimes you go really cold.
The Chesterton girls basketball team did just that in the fourth quarter
Wednesday night in dropping a 45-33 Duneland Athletic Conference decision to
Lake Central.
The Indians outscored the Trojans 13-1 in the fourth quarter.
“We did some good things offensively and defensively in the first three
quarters,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. “They went to the 1-3-1 and
it was like we’d never practiced against it before.”
Chesterton went 0-for-5 from the floor and turned it over five times during
the final stanza, including a 1-for-5 performance from the charity stripe.
“It doesn’t do us any good to get the ball in there (post) if we’re not
going to make free throws,” Campbell said.
After playing to a 10-10 tie after one quarter, the Indians lead grew to
24-17 in the second quarter and finally settled at 26-20 at halftime.
Chesterton got a conventional three-point play from Caroline Puntillo and
another Puntillo basket in transition to cut the lead to 30-28 with 3:23 to
go in the third period.
A free throw by LC was followed by baskets from Puntillo and Kelsey Conway
for the Trojans' first lead since 2-0. Chesterton would get only a Sarah
Richards free throw the rest of the way.
Puntillo led all scorers with 15 points and grabbed a team-high seven
rebounds. Richards and Jocelyn Lipscomb each tallied six points in the loss.
