The 2014 Chesterton volleyball team returns five seniors and eight letterwinners from last season as the season starts tonight.

The Trojans will host Hammond Morton beginning at 5:30 p.m. and are home again on Thursday to face Mishawaka beginning at 5 p.m.

“This team has a chance to be as good as they want to be,” Chesterton head coach TR Harlan said. “It’s a nice group of veterans and newcomers. How well they gel together and work together will be the key.”

Chesterton’s seniors include setters Shelby Snyder and Kennedy Baltus, outside hitter Emily Marcus and opposite’s Aubrey Nagdeman and Jessica Urycki.

“This group of seniors has been together a long time,” Harlan said. “They know this is their last time through the program and they want to do something special. If they continue to work hard every day, everything they want is in front of them.”

The Trojans also return sophomore middle hitter Sammi Ostrom to the attack.

“Sammi can be as dominating as any hitter in our conference,” Harlan said. “She’s really worked hard at becoming a better blocker and that has really helped our defense.”

Junior libero’s Madi Dubbs and Taylor Eaton will control the back line for the Trojans, while classmate Abby Moon will handle the other middle hitter spot. Junior Kaitlin Kuypers adds depth on the outside offensively and defensively.

Sophomore Haley Notzen will handle outside hitting duties as classmates Jenna Tarnowski and Brittany Milzarek are battling for playing time as well.

“Our conference is as good as any in the state,” Harlan said. “We’ll get tested every night we take the floor. It’ll be up to them just how good they want to be.”
