The Chesterton volleyball team will look to rebound from a season marred with injuries as the 2015 year begins at Hammond Morton tonight.

“In 20 years of coaching, I’ve never had a team go through anything like that last year,” Chesterton coach TR Harlan said. “It’s a new year with some fresh faces and some kids that are excited to put their stamp on things.”

The Trojans will turn to five seniors for leadership and stability, including returning starters Madi Dubbs (libero) and Abby Moon (middle hitter). Taylor Eaton (defensive specialist) returns off a concussion that cost her most of last year, while Caitlyn Toth (setter) and Kenzie Scott (defensive specialist) fill out the class.

“All five of those seniors bring something unique to the team on and off the court,” Harlan said. “They’ve done a good job as leaders through the preseason and now its time to take that to the court.”

In the junior class, setter Jenna Tarnowski, outside hitter Haley Notzen and opposite hitter Brittany Milzarek saw a lot of court time last year. Sammi Ostrom returns in the middle after missing all but four matches last year with a torn ACL.

“Sammi gets stronger and stronger every day and Brittany is really developing into a solid player for us,” Harlan said. “Haley and Jenna have the talent and intangible things you need to be great players. Their roles are expanding for us this year and they’ll have to adjust to that.”

Defensive specialist Alexa Devereaux and outside hitter Kristin Stillman are new to the varsity.

“Alexa is one of those kids that has to be in the program. She’s a great teammate that gives 100 percent in practice every day and its starting to show in her play,” Harlan said. “You can’t have enough of those kids. And Kristin made a huge jump over the summer. She’s straight to the varsity from the freshmen team, but is picking up the pace of the game quickly.”

Chesterton will open the home portion of its schedule on Monday, Aug. 24 when they host Andrean. The junior varsity and freshmen contests will being at 5 p.m. with the varsity game following.
