After a long break, you might as well find out where you stand right away.

The Chesterton volleyball team will open up the 2020 season by traveling to the Crown Point season-opening Invitational on Saturday. The Trojans will face Munster in the opener.

“This is a huge challenge for us,” CHS head coach Amber McCaw said. “But it’s really good to get a lot of reps in before the conference season. We get some practice early on this year that we haven’t had before.”

The Trojans return two All-Area players in junior outside hitter Meghan Gaffigan and senior setter Maggie Vrahoretis off a team that finished in the top half of the Duneland Athletic Conference.

“We obviously return two all-area players in Meghan and Maggie,” McCaw said. “They’ll play big roles for us. We only lost one starter, so we’re fairly seasoned with experience. Everyone is excited and cautiously optimistic.”

Sophomore Katie Nelson will hold down the other outside position, while Ella Rodriguez will man the right side.

“With those two kids, they’ve worked really hard, and got a lot of experience last year,” McCaw said.

In the middle juniors Emma Ekblaw and Reese Czarniecki will be counted on with AJ Devereaux scheduled for the libero job as the season begins.

Rounding out the roster are seniors Greta Tilden and Maddie Wagner, while juniors Celia Faroh, Brooke Smith and Grace Newman hold down that class. Sophomore Julia Maggio finishes up the roster.
