After a stunning semifinal victory over Valparaiso, the Chesterton volleyball team fell 26-24, 25-19, 25-11 to Crown Point in the IHSAA Sectional Finals on Saturday night.

“After such an emotional win in the afternoon, I thought the first game was really going to be a key,” Chesterton coach TR Harlan said. “The winner of that game could ride the emotion the rest of the night.”

The Trojans and Bulldogs battled point-for-point in game one and through most of game two until Crown Point pulled away and cruised through game three.

“It’s so hard to maintain that kind of effort and emotion,” Harlan said. “You can only go to the well so often before its goes dry.”

Emily Marcus led the Trojan offense with nine kills against the Bulldogs, while Aubrey Nagdeman and Jessica Urycki each tallied four kills.

Defensively, Jordyn Moleski had 12 digs with Marcus added eight. Sara Tarnowski and Shelby Snyder each had six digs.

In the semifinals, the Trojans battled back from a 2-0 deficit to beat Valparaiso 17-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-23, 16-14.

“I couldn’t be prouder of a group of kids to battle back like that,” Harlan said. “Against a team as good as Valpo, to battle and fight for every point like that is a tremendous show of character by the girls.”

Urycki led the offense with 14 kills as Marcus and Tarnowski each tallied eight kills.

“We made a change in game 3 and put in Sara (Tarnowski),” Harlan said. “She had the match of her life today. That’s what seniors do in big games.”

Snyder dished out a team-best 20 assists with Kennedy Baltus adding 19 helpers. Tarnowski also had four service aces with Moleski tallying three aces.

Defensively, Moleski had 20 digs and Marcus recorded 18. Tarnowski and Baltus each had 15 digs with Snyder adding 10.

The Trojans finished the season 23-13 overall.
