Before the season started, Chesterton girls tennis coach Gretchen Shinn knew her team had to find a way to win more 3-2 matches.

Friday afternoon, the Trojans did just that with a 3-2 victory over Mishawaka Marian.

“Last year we lost 3-2 and the junior varsity lost 8-0 to (Mishawaka Marian),” Shinn said. “So, to turn it around this year means a lot.”

Chesterton picked up two wins in singles as sophomore Elizabeth Shinn won 6-4, 6-3 over Adrienne Michaels at No. 1 and classmate Jannon Jeffries picked up a 6-1, 6-4 win over Bethany Eifriel at No. 3

The other Trojan victory came at No. 1 doubles as seniors Cristi Williams and Bharathi Muthusamy beat Ellen Eide and Kathleen Klaur 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).

“Our three points came from No. 1 and No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles,” Shinn said. “We had a great team effort from the entire squad tonight.”

The Chesterton junior varsity picked up five victories in doubles play and beat Mishawaka Marian 5-4.

Winners for the Trojans included Lauren Ingram-Stacey Kammerer, Sara Torabi-Heather Ribar, Amanda Stolarz-Holly Klawson, Olivia Gordon-Shelbie Sullivan and Tori Comegys-Brittny Stephan.
