It’s hard to believe the Chesterton Girls Swim team can do something new, but they did.

The Trojans amassed 571 points to win their 15th straight IHSAA Sectional title on Saturday at CHS. The 571 points is a program record.

“We’ve been over 500 once or twice before,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel said. “These kids continue to develop and they are students of the sport. It’s really fun to be around them.”

Chesterton set seven Sectional records and five Pool records on the day.

“We had a heckuva meet today,” Kinel said. “I was a little worried. We’ve been dealing with some sickness the last couple of weeks and missed some practice time with the weather. We were ok Thursday, but there wasn’t much electricity in the air.

“Today, the kids really came to play. We broke a lot of records and that’s fun.”

The Trojans started the day fast as the 200 Medley Relay group of Caylee Casbon, Cara Kroeger, Amy Socha and Marita Banta-Long set a Sectional record in 1:47.17.

Once the individual events took center stage, the Chesterton dominance became even more apparent.

The Trojans finished 1-2 in all eight individual swimming events and went 1-2-3 six times.

“Up and down the lineup, I was really pleased,” Kinel said. “I think we set ourselves up well for the State Meet.”

Kelly Craig started the string of wins in the 200 Free (1:52.97) as Trenee Fancher-Keller (1:55.67) and Wendy Banta-Long (1:57.14) finished 2-3.

“Trenee had great time drops and really came to swim today,” Kinel said. “Wendy had big time drops in the 200 and 500 Free today as well.”

Kroeger broke the Sectional and Pool marks in the 200 IM (2:03.50) as Marita Banta-Long (2:11.17) and Stephanie Krause (2:11.57) followed.

“Cara is coming off being sick as well,” Kinel said. “We only used her on one relay today, so that’s something we have to look at for next week. She’s a racer and she’s tough.”

Vanessa Krause led a 1-2-3 finish in the 50 Free with a Sectional and Pool record in the 50 Free (23.36). Andrea Hanas (24.51) earned a State callback with her second place finish and Brittany Borzych was third (25.17).

After the diving break, Krause came back with a Sectional and Pool record in the 100 Fly (54.95) as Erin Socha (58.92) and Casbon (59.21) went 2-3.

“Erin Socha is one of our hardest workers and really had a great swim in the Fly,” Kinel said. “Caylee Casbon going 57 in the backstroke and breaking 1:00 in the Fly was great to see.”

Andrea Hanas (53.14) and Marita Banta-Long (53.97) went 1-2 in the 100 Free just ahead of Amy Socha (5:03.69) winning the 500 Free.

“Amy Socha had a great time in the 500 Free for a freshman and was a big part of our relays,” Kinel said.

In the 200 Free Relay, the quartet of Krause, Borzych, Hanas and Craig won in a Sectional and Pool record time of 1:36.91.

Kroeger continued her incredible day with a Sectional and Pool record victory in the 100 Back (56.16). Casbon (57.63) and Stephanie Krause (59.94) finished 2-3.

“Stephanie Krause breaking a 1:00 in the 100 Back and finishing her career off with a great drop and getting through an important barrier was great to see,” Kinel said.

Craig broke a 20-year-old Sectional record in the 100 Breaststroke with her victory in 1:05.86. Aubrey Wing’s second place swim of 1:07.08 also earned a berth to the State Finals.

“That’s certainly a great swim for Kelly,” Kinel said. “Aubrey Wing making the State Cut was great. That was her goal, but it took a big time drop to do it.”

The Trojans put the finishing touches on the victory with a win by the group of Vanessa Krause, Hanas, Amy Socha and Craig in the 400 Free Relay in a Sectional record time of 3:32.23.

“Vanessa has a great leadoff leg for us and she’s coming off of being sick too,” Kinel said. “She’s tough, but she really shined today.”
