The Chesterton girls soccer team didn’t wait around to see if an upset was brewing Thursday night.

The Trojans scored four first half goals and cruised to a 9-0 IHSAA Sectional opening victory over Michigan City at Portage High School.

Carley Perkins scored three goals in the first 15 minutes of action ahead of Jenna Wadding’s tally for a 4-0 lead at the halftime break.

Abby Joiner scored just three minutes into the second half as Novi Lopez (2 goals), Molly Grimes and Olivia Hansen all added tallies to set the final score.

Chesterton’s defense didn’t allow a shot on goal against goalie Christine Jackson.

“Defensively, I thought our girls played great,” Chesterton coach Jason Conway said. “Our four kids back there did a tremendous job.”

The Trojans will face off against Valparaiso, a 6-0 winner over Hobart, on Saturday night in the Sectional Championship beginning at 7 p.m.

“Valpo and Chesterton are such a great rivalry, that anything can happen,” Conway said. “It’s the Sectional Championship. Records don’t matter. It’s all about the team with the most talent. It’s about teams that work together and that is where our success comes from.”
