CHS Girls run away from Gary West 52-30

Back To Front Page

The Chesterton girls basketball team won their fifth straight game and improved to 15-1 on the season with an impressive 52-30 victory over Gary West Side on Tuesday night.

“Teams get worn down psychologically when they’re turning the ball over and over and the other team keeps scoring,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. “It was an overall great ballgame for us, especially defensively. We’re generally pretty solid on that end, and tonight, I thought we put four good quarters together without and glitches.”

The Trojans built a 17-8 lead through one quarter, thanks in part to an 8-2 run to finish it, and increased the lead to 25-16 at halftime.

Chesterton turned up the defensive pressure even more to start the third quarter as the Trojans recorded six of their 11 steals in a 19-3 run to start the frame. Courtney Krol scored 14 straight points during the run on her way to a game-high 24.

“We have a lot of length on our defense and that forces other guards to throw lob passes,” Krol said. “That allows us on defense to read them and pick them off. That leads to our transition offense. Our defense made great reads for those steals.”

The Trojan defense held Gary West 23 points under their season average and forced them into a 12-of-33 (36 percent) shooting night from the field.

Chesterton returns to Duneland Athletic Conference action on Friday night when they travel to Merrillville to take on the Pirates. The JV game is set for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
