Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel probably had another set of clothes and had visualized his trademark flip off the diving board in case the Trojans picked up their ninth consecutive Sectional title on Saturday afternoon.

They did, but Kinel never got a chance to execute.

The Trojans amassed 357 points to outdistance second place Valparaiso (285 1/2), but ended with a disqualification in the 400 Free Relay to leave a deflated feeling throughout the pool area.

“This was a perfect day until that,” Kinel said. “What do you say. We just swam out of our minds and did a great job in the relay. Something like that to end on is really rough.”

The Trojans put on an impressive performance in the meet’s final relay, but celebrated by jumping into the water before the race was complete and were DQ’d.

“I just think we were so excited that we just jumped in to celebrate before the girl out in lane 7 was done,” Kinel said. “If anybody is to blame, it’s me. Apparently I didn’t go through it enough with them that you can’t do that. They were just excited kids.”

The DQ gave the top spot to Merrillville and a berth in the State Finals for the Pirates quartet.

“These kind of things really challenge a championship team,” Kinel said. “I know we’re tough enough to come back and swim well next weekend. They’re kids and sometimes kids have accidents. It happens.”

It put a damper on the final result, but had no bearing on an impressive day across the board for the Trojans.

The quartet of Brittany Fozkos, Meaghan McLaughlin, Mallory Przybylinski and Taylor Lipniskis got things started off right with a victory in the 200 Medley Relay. Przybylinski entered the water in the third leg in third place overall, but exited in the top spot to get things going.

“The Fly leg of the Medley Relay is becoming one of Mallory’s top events,” Kinel said. “The other teams had a little bit of an edge on us when she went into the water. That was good and it really sparked us.”

“I’m not a flyer,” Przybylinski said. “Coach had told us this was the race that could set the whole meet off for us, so I knew we had to go out and do it.”

Shauna Foor and Milana Socha followed the win with a 1-2 finish in the 200 Free.

“The 200, I did better than I expected to do,” Foor said. “Milana and I went 1-2 and that’s what we were going for. We’ve been training for this all season.”

Meaghan McLaughlin won the first of her two Sectional titles with a 2:11.87 time in the 200 IM.

“Meaghan’s unshaved and we feel like her best times are going to come at the State Meet,” Kinel said.

Fozkos turned in a Sectional and Pool Record in winning the 50 Free in 23.81. Przybylinski also beat the State cut with a second place finish in 24.05.

“I’m kind of surprised,” Fozkos said. “That’s what I visualized doing. I was where the other people were, so I was hoping that would mean I was faster today.”

“That was the goal all year,” Przybylinski said. “I’ve been having really bad starts and I knew I just had to concentrate on that. It’s so amazing. I had no idea. I thought I was in fourth.

“I just shoved my head in the water and swam as fast as I could.”

McLaughlin came back in the 100 Fly with a 59.96, just before Fozkos, Foor and Brandi Nay finished 2-3-4 in the 100 Free. Fozkos and Foor hit the State cut.

Milana Socha won the 500 Free in 5:17.88, but has a lot left in the tank.

“I felt good in the water,” Socha said. “But, I still think there’s more I can do. I’m really excited to see what I can do at State.”

Socha turned right around and joined Przybylinski, Foor and Lipniskis for a victory in the 200 Free Relay. The Trojans set a Sectional and Pool Record in swimming a 1:37.71.

“The Relay was so exciting,” Socha said. “We wanted it so bad. I’m surprised we swam a 37 today though. We’ve gone 38, but to do it today, it’s really exciting.”

The Sectional victory was the ninth consecutive title for the Trojans.

“Obviously, it’s always sweet, but it’s hard to end like this,” Kinel said. “Nobody got thrown in or anything like that. It’s a solemn note to end on. Sometimes you have to learn some lessons and this was an expensive one.”
