It’s a popular refrain É when the ball doesn’t go in the basket, etc., etc., etc. É.

The Chesterton girls basketball team struggled from the floor twice on Saturday in the DAC Holiday Invitational at Valparaiso High School.

In the morning, the Trojans dropped a 54-48 decision to Michigan City and then fell 48-39 to the host Vikings in the evening.

“We got beat in two games back-to-back on the same day by one person,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. “This morning it was (Michal) Miller (Michigan City) and tonight it was (Grace) Withrow (Valparaiso).”

Against the Vikings, the Trojans fell behind 21-13 at the half after a 5-of-24 (21 percent) performance from the foul line.

Chesterton did take a 26-24 lead in the third quarter thanks to a 11-0 run as they hit 7-of-13 shots from the field. The game was tied 31-all after three quarters.

“We had to deal with some injuries tonight and the second group really did a pretty good job,” Campbell said. “We had 10 healthy bodies and I decided we’d just rotate in 4-5 kids at a time. (Coach Berry) does it at the JV level and he handles our subs.

“It may be something we keep doing.”

The game remained tied at 35 after a basket by Jordan Wadding with 6:03 to play, but the Vikings got four straight points from Withrow to take control. Withrow finished with 24 points on the night.

“We turned the ball over a couple of times and gave them easy baskets on the other end and that swung things in their favor,” Campbell said.

After a basket by Hayley Sekula cut the lead to 41-39, Valpo finished the game on a 7-0 run to set the final score. Sekula led the Trojans with 15 points.

Against the Wolves, Chesterton hit on 3-of-25 (12 percent) from 3-point range and were thwarted by Miller’s 38-point performance.

Caroline Puntillo led the Trojans with 12 points, while Wadding added 10 points.
