Caroline Puntillo’s running three-pointer glanced off the rim and Lake Central escaped with a 57-54 victory in the Duneland Conference opener for the Chesterton girls basketball team on Friday night.

“We had a chance,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. “They forced us out of a lot of things we wanted to do on offense. They put a lot of pressure on us and I thought we did a pretty good job of handling it.”

The Trojans trailed 49-43 with 1:43 to play before a Sarah Richards triple cut the lead in half. After two free throws for LC, Jocelyn Lipscomb hit all three charity tosses after being fouled behind the 3-point line.

Kusbel missed two free throws to give the Trojans a chance to tie with 17.7 seconds left, but they turned it over in the backcourt and Megan Krol hit two free throws for LC.

After Kelsey Conway’s three-pointer with 5.7 seconds left, Gina Rubino hit two free throws with 5.1 seconds to play before Puntillo’s running three bounced awry with no time on the clock.

“We got to the point where we just had to go make some basketball plays and we did,” Campbell said.

Puntillo spearheaded the Trojan offense all night on her way to a game-high 22 points and eight rebounds.

“Caroline was able to get the ball to the basket and get herself to the foul line,” Campbell said. “But, she’s been doing that for us all year.”

The Trojans forced 21 turnovers, while committing just 13 themselves.

“We tried to put pressure on their passers because (Lindsay) Kusbel is just so good in the post,” Campbell said. “Natalie Petro did a great job on her, but they resigned themselves to shoot 3’s. We’ve played pretty well defensively the last four or five games. Jocelyn is so good on top of the zone for us creating deflections and getting us out in transition.”
