The Chesterton girls basketball team dropped a 70-43 decision at Merrillville on Friday night.

“Just too much (AJ) Downs and (Victoria) Gaines,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. “They dominated the game.”

Downs scored a game-high 24 points, while Gaines scored 14 points and tallied 10 rebounds.

“Even when we scored, they beat us down the floor for layups,” Campbell said. “They shot over 60 percent from the floor, but didn’t shoot anything but layups. When they did miss, they got the offensive rebound.”

Chesterton made just 12 baskets in the game and turned the ball over 19 times. Caroline Puntillo led the Trojans with 14 points.
