Chesterton boys track coach John Snyder knows his young team has a lot to learn, but they took a step forward on Thursday night with a 94-36 victory over Highland.

“There were some things I was pleased with and some areas I was disappointed in that we have to get better at to be a solid team,” Snyder said. “We’re young and there are some things at meets that our kids have to understand better and that will come with some experience.”

The Trojans biggest rival at the track Thursday night was themselves and that served for some interesting races.

“One of the biggest things with having the numbers we have is that there is always going to be somebody next to you,” Snyder said. “It forces you to compete and we had some kids that really did that.”

On the track, individual winners for the Trojans included Jacob Holth (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles), David Osborn (1,600, 3,200), Cole Galloway (400) and Andrew Morris (800).

“We had a lot of kids run pretty well,” Snyder said. “Remy Lewis did some nice things. Matt Mabry and Zach Carnahan did a nice job in the 200. Jon Watson could be a very good runner. He’s got a lot to learn, but he has all the tools.”

The Trojans also won all three relays.

“Zach Bloomquist holding off Cole Galloway in the 4x400 at the end was nice to see,” Snyder said. “He hadn’t been really happy with the way he’d been running. Chris Robinson has potential that he may not realize. He really ran a nice 400 to open up the 4x400 for his team.

“If we can make things competitive, we’re going to get better.”

In the field events, Lewis won the high jump (5-8), while Dan Deilumo won the shot put (44-11).

“Field events are a concern area,” Snyder said. “Hopefully we can get better there. Dan Deilumo threw about 45 feet in the shot put as a freshman and that’s a pretty good start.”
