CHS Boys Tennis opens with win

The Chesterton boys tennis team opened its dual meet season with a 5-0 shutout of Illiana Christian on Thursday.

In singles, Drake Redman cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Mat Smits at No. 1, while Fabio Haiduc beat Wesley Olthor 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2. Ian Condes completed the singles sweep with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-0) win over Hayden DeYoung at No. 3.

“I was happy with how the singles guys all got out to quick starts,” Chesterton head coach Tom Bour said. “Condes slipped a bit trying to close his match out, but Haiduc and Redman showed off their experience as they shut the door on their opponents.”

In doubles, John Powell and Troy Feller beat Tyler Barker and Gabe VanRoekel 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1. John Petro and David Archbald beat Hunter DeYoung and Wil Gibson 6-1, 6-2 to finish the night.

The Trojans return to the court on Tuesday when they travel to Crown Point for a 4:15 p.m. first serve.

Junior Varsity

Chesterton 7, Illiana Christian 1

The Chesterton junior varsity swept singles play and cruised to a 7-1 victory over Illiana Christian.

Singles winners were Danny Vear (No. 1), Connor Potesta (No. 2) and Mark Jewison (No. 3).

Doubles winners were Connor Engels/Cole Snyder (No. 1), Alex Henderson/Grant Flesher (No. 2), Gavin Rivera/Max Haughtington (No. 3) and Sam Slutzkin/Adam Royster (No. 4).
