With just 48 hours until their date with Munster, the Chesterton boys turned to a new group and had little trouble picking up a 147-39 Duneland Athletic Conference victory over Merrillville on Tuesday night.

“It was a super meet for us tonight,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel said. “We didn’t use most of our varsity guys with the meet against Munster coming up on Thursday. Up and down the line, we had great swims tonight.”

The Trojans did everything possible to set the tone early on with a 1-2 finish in the 200 Medley Relay and 1-2-3 finishes in the 200 Free and 200 IM.

Spencer Wright got the first of his two individual victories with a win in the 200 Free (1:57.66) ahead of David Diaz winning the 200 IM (2:15.85).

“Spencer Wright going 1:57 in the 200 Free and 5:08 in the 500 was great,” Kinel said. “David Diaz swam great in both of his events, the IM and the Fly.”

After Alex Olson led a 1-2-3 finish for Chesterton in Diving, Collin Buckles won the 100 Fly (57.65) and Salvador Mujica won the 100 Free (54.49).

“Sal Mujica going 54 low in the 100 Free,” Kinel said. “Our divers were really good tonight too. Alex almost broke 300 and Matt and Enrique did a really nice job.”

Buckles got his second victory with a win in the 100 Breast just after Nate Schuster won the 100 Back.

“Collin Buckles went nuts here today,” Kinel said. “He went 57 in the Fly and then went 1:07 in Breaststroke. Those are both huge time drops.

“It was a great meet overall. It builds the confidence in them. You know, it takes meets like this to realize that, these guys are our future.”
