CHS Boys cross country captures Sectional title

It wasn’t a foregone conclusion, but Chesterton boys cross country coach Tim Ray wasn’t overly worried about his team’s performance heading into Tuesday’s Sectional at Sunset Hill Farm.

“We haven’t changed anything in our training pattern,” Ray said. “We’re running well right now and we don’t want them to get out of their pattern and habits.”

That’s why Monday’s 14-mile run didn’t hinder the Trojans in picking up the Sectional title with a 33-49 victory over Valparaiso.

“It was a solid effort for a Tuesday race,” Ray said. “We hadn’t run well on Tuesday for a while. It was a nice, surprising run for us.”

David Osborn finished second overall (15:48.9) to LaPorte’s Matthew Miller (15:41.1) and will continue to see orange for the next three weeks.

“David ran a good race,” Ray said. “He and Miller will battle every race through the State Meet. I think it’s only going to help them both in the long run.”

Thomas Halpin turned in a solid performance as well with a third place overall finish in 16:05.6.

“Thomas had struggled for the last couple of weeks,” Ray said. “He was looking to get back on track and get some confidence. He did that.”

The rest of the Trojan finishers included Shane Kenney (7th, 16:21.0), Jon Rogers (10th, 16:30.2), Ian Smith (11th, 16:30.9), Ryan Cutter (17th, 16:45.5) and Manny Orlich (35th, 17:44.1).

“Shane, Ian and Jon ran a nice tight pack,” Ray said. “It was a fast course, but they really competed better than they had all year with the Valpo and LaPorte kids.”
