The Chesterton Wrestling team scrambled to fill weights and went 0-4 on the day, but showed some bright spots at the CHS Super Duals on Saturday.

The Trojans dropped decisions to Delphi (42-39), Munster (36-30), Elkhart Memorial (46-15) and McCutcheon (48-19). Munster took the team title with a 4-0 record.

“It kind of went the way I expected it to go,” Chesterton coach Chris Joll said. “I think we were closer in some of the matches then we should have been because of the effort of a few of our kids. We gave up about 24 points in each match with forfeits and inexperienced wrestlers.

“We knew that from 125 to 171 we’d give teams problems and we did.”

The Trojans had four individual weight class winners on the day with Zack Thornton winning at 125, Chris Katsafaros at 130, Joe Kelly at 135 and Will Butz at 140.

Thornton, a state-qualifier last year, picked up right where he left off with a 4-0 day.

“Zack came off being sick and picked up right where he left off,” Joll said. “We’ll figure out a way to generate some more offense, but teams knew what he was going to do today and they just couldn’t stop it.”

At 130, Katsafaros made his high-school debut with a 4-0 day that included two falls and two decisions.

“I hope nobody reads the paper and finds out how good he is,” Joll said. “He can go under people almost St. Germain-ish and keeps his composure really well. He had a match where he got behind and immediately came right back.

“Sometimes he does things so quickly that you don’t really see it.”

At 135, Kelly went 3-1 with a fall and two decisions.

“Joe Kelly was 3-1 and could have easily been 2-2 or 4-0,” Joll said. “He’s right there. When you go from being 5-foot-3 to 5-foot-8 in one summer and gain 23 pounds, you’re going to struggle. I was very proud of the way he wrestled.”

Butz was the final weight class winner at 140 with four wins by decision.

“Will had tougher matches in wrestle-off’s in our room than he did today,” Joll said. “We’re very deep at 140 and he’s earned that spot. I was proud of the way he wrestled. It was a lot different than the Will Butz we saw last year.

“He has vastly improved since last year.”

Brandon Garvey (152), Ryan Thomalla (160) and Chris Copollo (145) all had two wins on the day, while Tony Sanchez (171), Vinnie Quiroga (189) and Gus Hultman (285) all recorded one win.
