For the first time in five years, the Chesterton volleyball team is off to a
2-0 start thanks to a 25-21, 25-22, 25-19 victory over Mishawaka Thursday
night.
The Trojans put together a 6-2 run to break open a 19-all tie in the first
game with two kills from Emily Mozwecz. Mozwecz led the Chesterton offense
with seven kills on the night, while also recording 13 digs.
In game two, the Trojans jumped out to a 6-1 lead with six straight service
points, including two aces, from Michelle Fekete. The lead improved to 12-4
before Mishawaka made a big run and took a 19-17 lead. Chesterton responded
with a pair of kills from Abby Skube and another by Morgan Palombizio to get
a 25-22 victory.
In game three, the Trojans again put on a late run and cruised to a 25-19
victory.
Skube and MaryBeth Ryan aided the offensive attack with six kills each, while
Fekete had four and Palombizio added three in the win. Kathleen Maple dished
out a team-best 15 assists.
Defensively, Andrea Levrio recorded a career-high 26 digs with Lindsey
Hutnick adding 10. Palombizio also added seven.
At the net, MaryBeth Ryan had five block kills and Fekete had two. Mozwecz
led the team with three service aces.
The Trojan win was the 100th career win for coach TR Harlan.

The Chesterton junior varsity swept Mishawaka in two games 25-18, 25-16.
Alexis Zimmer led the Trojan offense with six kills, while Brittany Funk
added two kills. Kate Nowak had a team-high 10 assists.
Defensively, Mary Carr and Zimmer each had eight digs with Brittany Bocian
adding seven and Alyssa Ham had six digs. Nikki Crawford added three block
kills in the win.
Freshmen

The Chesterton freshman improved to 2-0 on the year with a 25-17, 25-22
victory over Mishawaka.
Michaela Raffin led the offense with five kills, while Elaina Gerlach had
four and Lydia Gill tallied three kills. Lauren Kenney dished out a team-high
nine assists and Korelle Melcarek had eight assists.
Defensively, Gill had a team-best seven digs, with Nora Schultz, Erica Puent
and Lauren Kenney all getting four digs.
Gerlach added two block kills on the night, while Schultz, Raffin, Kathleen
Sheeran, Kenney and Gill all had three service aces.
