Chesterton Volleyball falls in DAC opener

The Chesterton volleyball team battled, but couldn’t get over the hump and dropped a 25-23, 20-25, 25-15, 19-25, 15-12 decision at Portage in the Duneland Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Sophomore Katie Urycki led the way with 13 kills, 16 digs and three service aces for the Trojans, but it wasn’t enough.

Offensively, Lydia Gill added nine kills, while Claire Holba had seven kills. Riley Taubert and Emily Nix each had five kills. Kate Nowak dished out 35 assists.

Defensively, Nix and Korelle Melcarek had nine digs with Nowak adding eight digs. Katie Osborn had seven digs in the loss.

Nix led the team with eight block kills as Taubert added four block kills. Melcarek also had three service aces.

Junior Varsity

Chesterton 25-25, Portage 16-15

The Chesterton junior varsity improved to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in Duneland Athletic Conference play with an impressive 25-16, 25-15 victory over Portage Thursday.

Ariane Mahaffey led the Trojans with eight kills and 11 digs.

Offensively, Ali Ostrom had four kills, while Taylor Witt and Allison Bachman had three kills each. Jennifer Williams dished out a team-best nine assists.

Defensively, Sara Tarnowski had nine digs and Sammi Martin added eight digs.

Freshmen

Portage 19-25-15,

Chesterton 25-22-14

The Chesterton freshmen dropped a heart-breaker on Thursday night 19-25, 25-22, 15-14 to Portage.

Offensively, Jocelyn Lipscomb led the Trojans with three kills, while Jessica Thornton and Anna Crowley had two kills each. Shelby Carter dished out six assists to lead Chesterton.

Defensively, Ashley Hecimovich and Megan Legler each had three digs. Legler also added a team-high nine service aces.
