The Trojans faced off across the net on Tuesday afternoon, a war of maroon
and gold versus yellow and blue.
Fourth-ranked Highland defeated Chesterton by a 4-1 score including two
three-set victories.
“I was really proud of the way we fought,” Chesterton coach Gretchen Shinn
said. “We had two three setters that didn’t go our way but at least I saw a
little fight, especially from the No. 2 doubles. They got it to a third set
and I was really proud of that.”
J.J. Lee was the only Chesterton winner at No. 3 singles, overcoming
Highland’s Sarah Hojnicki and finishing her match with a 7-5, 6-2 victory.
At No. 1 singles Bobbi Modesto and opponent Vani Madrigal battled all
afternoon splitting the first two sets 1-6, 6-1, before Madrigal took
control in a 7-5 victory in the third set.
Margaret Shinn had trouble beating her rival, finishing the match with two
6-3 losses to Highland’s Aby Madrigal at No. 2 singles.
“Bobbi and Vani go way back,” Shinn said. “They [Highland] have very good
players. They lost quite a few too but they are still a deep team.”
Chesterton’s No. 2 doubles were brought back for a third round also. Brittny
Stephan and Lauren Sergent fought hard through two sets 6-4, 3-6, but
couldn’t finish if off, losing 6-0 against Highland’s Michelle Geissler and
Lan Franczek.
“It was a good day,” Shinn added. “I mean, we hung in.”
