Chesterton Softball picks up first win

Back To Front Page

As the weather warms up, so are the bats.

The Chesterton softball team pounded out 17 hits and scored 16 runs in picking up a 16-5 non-conference victory on Saturday night at Mishawaka.

“Offensively we got some noise from some new faces,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “Several of our girls are seeing the ball well right now. That is very encouraging.”

Mishawaka jumped on the scoreboard first with a pair of two-out singles and a double for a 2-0 lead.

Things stayed that way until the top of the third when the Trojans exploded.

Mallory McKee started the rally with a one-out home run. Alexa Olson doubled and Sydney Cooley singled ahead of a Bailey Slivka home run.

Sarah Richards singled and Lia Lombardini reached on an error. They both scored when McKee reached on a two-out error.

The Trojans put the final touches on the victory in the fourth inning when they sent 14 hitters to the plate en route to 10 runs.

The innings’ big blow came on a two-run double by Sierra LaFreniere that scored Cooley and Slivka. Mishawaka added three walks and contributed two errors to the onslaught.

Mishawaka tried to mount a comeback in the fifth as they benefited from three walks and a couple of Trojan errors, but Cooley came in to close the door in relief.

“It was nice to see how Brittany (Milzarek) would do in her first start,” Hopson said. “She did a very nice job. I was happy to see Sydney come in and stop the rally as well.”

Hopson did have concerns about the Trojans’ four errors, but solid play in the outfield was a positive.

“Defensively, we still need to improve some,” Hopson said. “We are getting better. Our outfielders Allena McElfresh, Lisette Martinez and Alexa Olson had an outstanding night.”
