First year Chesterton gymnastics coach Lauren West gets it.

“I’m not measuring us against the other teams in the area,” West said. “I really like to see the progress that we are making week to week. That’s more real for the girls. How are our performances getting better each week?”

And they are, even after dropping a 112.85-106.025 decision against No. 1-ranked Valparaiso on Tuesday night.

“It wasn’t our best, but it wasn’t our worst,” West said. “I think our scores reflected that we are getting better.”

The Trojans got off to a solid start on bars with a fourth place finish for Brandi Tuzinski (9.00) and fifth place 8.875 from Lindsey Campbell.

“Bars started strong with Mariel (McElfresh) getting back into the swing of things there,” West said. “That really boosts the other girls and we had some solid routines.”

On vault, Tuzinski was third with a 9.05 and Campbell was sixth at 8.70.

“Lindsey stood up her vault for the first time in competition and that’s really good,’ West said. “She flipped both of her vaults and hopefully has the confidence to bring it to the level she wants it to be now.”

After Marisa Myers was fourth on the floor (9.00) and Tuzinski was fifth (8.975), the Trojans headed to the beam.

“I was really happy that we finished on beam because that’s our strongest event,” West said. “To be last on that event, they really have to focus and it put some pressure on them. I was really excited to see them react well to that.”

Tuzinski led the way with a second place finish (9.45) and Myers was fourth (9.25).

“Hanna (Martich) started us off with the best routine I’ve ever seen her do,” West said. “We had two great routines from Brandi and Marisa and several other solid ones.

“And all of our mistakes were aggressive mistakes and that’s what you want to see as a coach.”
