Chesterton Girls Track sweeps No. 14 Merrillville and LaPorte

Chesterton coach Steve Kearney always figures out a meet on paper before it’s run. Fortunately Tuesday night, the Trojans ran on the track.

Chesterton beat No. 14 Merrillville (81-51) and LaPorte (92-40) to pick up a pair of Duneland Athletic Conference victories.

“We won pretty handily and when I figured it out on paper and I had this meet really close,” Kearney said. “I thought we would score 68 points (against Merrillville), but I wasn’t real comfortable with that.”

The Trojans picked up two important victories in relays as the 4x800 quartet of Kelsey Phillips, Tina Guidarelli, Jamie Norgaard and Allyson Harvey took top honors (10:18.05).

Not to be outdone, the 4x100 group of Bailey Huddleston, Mallory Przybylinski, Megan Erminger and Katie McColly won in 51.69.

“I thought the 4x800 and the 4x100 times were really good on a day like this,” Kearney said. “It was nice to see Megan Erminger back running too.”

The Trojans racked up 1-2-3 finishes in just two events as Harvey (2:29.20) led Jamie and Jenna Norgaard to a sweep in the 800. Chloe Lawson, Michelle Richsteig and Erin Kelly did the same in the pole vault.

“In the 800, that’s really a team effort,” Kearney said. “Jenna, Jamie and Tina (Guidarelli) did a nice job of picking people off by running together. That’s just good team running.

“Erin Kelly got us a varsity point in the pole vault too. That’s nice to see.”

Other individual winners for the Trojans included Brianne Guardiola in the 300 hurdles (49.23) and Rachel Crawford in the high jump (5-1), so the second and third place points proved to be the difference.

“You’d think at this time of the year you’d have some decent weather to set a lot of PR’s,” Kearney said. “It’s not and we’re doing it anyway.”
