The Chesterton girls track team won two event titles and finished second in the IHSAA Sectional at CHS on Tuesday.

Valparaiso won the team title with 137 points, while Chesterton (127), Portage (119) and LaPorte (81) rounded out the top four.

“Wish we could have found a way to sneak out the 10 points to win, but we scored more points than we were seeded to,” Chesterton coach Bryan Nallenweg said. “We had a pretty good night. Our sprinters and hurdlers ran well again and they’ve done that for us all year.”

Desiree Bell cruised to the Trojans’ first title of the night with a first place finish in the 100 hurdles (15.83), almost a full second of Valparaiso’s Madison Buyer (16.68).

The other title came from the quartet of Bell, Emma Tumbas, Samantha Warren and Molly Wilson in the 4x100 (50.87).

“Desiree and the 4x100 were going to win as long as they ran decent races,” Nallenweg said. “Desiree ran her PR in the hurdles and the 4x100 got through without their best performance.”

The top three finishers in every event advanced to next Tuesday’s IHSAA Regional at Valparaiso High School

Second place point scorers for the Trojans included Molly Wilson (100), Samantha Warren (200), Teresa Raffin (300 hurdles), Brianna Stephan (high jump) and Zoi Heideman (pole vault).

“Molly was second in the 100 with a PR in this weather,” Nallenweg said. “Zoi finished second in the pole vault tonight and it seems like she just keeps going higher every week and that’s nice to see from a freshman.”

Third place finishers individually included Cara Sullivan (3200), Warren (long jump) and Olivia Kaiser (shot put).

“Olivia Kaiser finished third in the shot put which is a huge pickup in points for us and gets her to the Regional,” Nallenweg said. “Cara Sullivan finishing third in the 3200 and running with the two girls from LaPorte was a great run. That’s an impressive performance and I’m excited to see what she can do next week in the Regional.”

The Trojans also advanced with third place finishes in the 4x400 from the quartet of Ana Acevedo, Kassandra Anaya, Raffin and Kirsten Wozniak, while the 4x800 duplicated the performance with the group of Kassidy Scott, Shelby Snyder, Sullivan and Wozniak.
