Even the accomplishments of Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel may not have fully
prepared him for the work ahead of him in 2007-08.
With graduation losses that included a host of state champions and an
unproven group of newcomers, the Trojans found their way right back to the
IHSAA State Finals at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis and a seventh place
finish (92 1¦2 points).
Carmel racked up 387 points to outdistance second place Hamilton Southeastern
(317 1¦2 points).
“This was a tough season,” Kinel said. “We lost a lot of people. We had to
manufacture things and have kids swim events they don’t normally do. We had a
lot of sprinters and kids that had to find other events.
“Looking back on it all, I wouldn’t have dreamed we would be seventh on the
first day of practice.”
The seventh place finish was one spot higher than the previous season’s
eighth place finish.
“For the most part we maximized our scoring potential,” Kinel said. “I was
really pleased. Our goal was to finish in the top 10. After the prelims we
knew that was a possibility.”
Sophomore Brittany Fozkos was the top Trojan point scorer on the weekend with
a tie for third place in the 50 Free (23.64) and an eighth place finish in
the 100 Free (52.57).
“She was as focused an individual as you can have,” Kinel said. “She was
determined to swim great and she did. She had big time drops in the 50 and
100.”
Fozkos was also a member of the 200 Medley Relay that finished eighth
(1:50.24) and the third place 200 Free Relay (1:36.39).
“Prelim night her backstroke in the Medley Relay was a second drop,” Kinel
said. “Her lead leg in the 200 Free Relay was a big time drop.”
Junior Mallory Przybylinski was also a member of both relay teams and was
eighth overall in the 50 Free (24.34).
“Before the year started she never would have been our flyer in the 200
Medley,” Kinel said. “She swam 26.0 Prelim night in the fly and was great in
the 200 Free Relay. She has come so far this season.”
Sophomore Shauna Foor finished 17th in the 100 Free (53.83) and was a member
of the 200 Free Relay squad, while freshman Meaghan McLaughlin finished 19th
in the 200 IM (2:11.52) and was part of the 200 Medley Relay.
“Shauna did a good job of getting things under control and did a great job in
the Free Relay for us,” Kinel said. “Meaghan dropped time in everything.”
The Trojans also got a 20th place finish from sophomore Milana Socha in the
500 Free (5:19.25).
“She did a great job and got great experience,” Kinel said. “I think she’s
one of those kids that will really use this as motivation for the off-season
and next year.”
The final Trojan to participate in the State Finals was senior Taylor
Lipniskis.
“Taylor’s experience on relays really helped,” Kinel said. “Everyone else is
back and got some real valuable experience.”
Chesterton was ranked 35th in the preseason coaches poll, but had no
intention of staying there.
“We had so many obstacles to overcome this year,” Kinel said. “We tried to
solidify our lineup and take it a meet at a time. All year, top 10 at State
was something we were working toward.
“Sometimes you get complacent and expect things. This year we had to really
work for everything. I feel really good about the future.”
