Chesterton Girls Golf finishes 4th at DAC Championships

Dale Hewitt knew chances were incredibly slim that the Chesterton girls golf team would be able to extend its six-time defending DAC championship meet streak to another year on Monday afternoon.

Even though the Trojans finished a disappointing fourth place, missing Crown Point in third place by just one stroke, the Chesterton girls golf coach saw plenty of positives to take from the annual tournament held at The Brassie.

Chesterton freshman Cara Kroeger led the Trojans by shooting a 76, while Gracie Jones added an 84.

“Considering we started three freshmen, I’m pretty happy with how the day went,” Hewitt said. “I would’ve liked to have taken third place, but there was a lot of good golf out on the course today.”

Valparaiso’s Harley Dubsky carded an eagle and five birdies to take medalist honors (67) at the course that has been dominated by Chesterton’s Kelly Grassel for the last four years. The Michigan State commit was on hand to cheer on the Trojans as was former golfer Marissa Kroeger, who was checking out her younger sister.

“This was a great experience for me today,” the younger Kroeger said. “I was finally able to break 80 and I feel like I am just going to continue to improve from here.”

The Vikings won the meet by shooting a 317 while Lake Central finished in second place with 335 strokes. Crown Point carded a 342 and the Trojans were right behind with a 343, a score that Hewitt believes could’ve easily been improved.

“We left some putts on the course today,” Hewitt said. “It’s always a development when you’re young. I’m very pleased with the scores.”

Match play will begin in earnest this week and Kroeger is feeling more confident after Monday’s event, as are her freshmen teammates Andrea and Lexy Hanas.

“I got a ton of confidence from today, I know that we all did,” Kroeger said. “We’re the underdog team this year, but we need to keep improving. I’m trying to learn from (Dubsky) every time I golf with her. This will only help me in the future.”
