Chesterton Boys Track falls to Crown Point in DAC meet

Chesterton boys track coach John Snyder really believed his team could get a win Tuesday night against Crown Point.

The Bulldogs escaped with a 71-56 victory, but Snyder did see something he’s been looking for.

“I’m only disappointed in the fact that I thought we had a chance to win against a quality team,” Snyder said. “I’m excited tonight because the meet meant something to our kids. We emphasized it and they asked all night what the score was. That means it’s starting to mean something to them and that’s what we’re looking for.”

Chesterton’s only double individual winner was David Osborn who took top honors in the 800 and 1,600.

“David Osborn was really impressive today,” Snyder said. “He ran a personal best in the 4x800 and came back to win the mile and the 800. That’s a tough triple.”

The Trojans also got individual victories from Mark VanDenburgh (discus), Chris Linn (high jump), Tony Smith (pole vault), Sam Jaeger (shot put) and Jake Holth (110 hurdles).

“We had some kids not do as well as I thought they’d do and we had some kids do better,” Snyder said. “It came down to about the last three events with a chance to win. Crown Point has a couple of really good two milers that did a great job and the 4x400 got scratched out because of an unfortunate incident on the backstretch.”

A 1-2-3 finish in the pole vault aided the charge, as did several individual performances.

“Our pole vaulters swept just like we told them we had to if we wanted a chance to win the meet and that’s a very positive thing,” Snyder said. “Matt Mabry had a good day. He finished third in the 100. He had a 52 in the 400 and a 51.3 in the 4x400. Joe Raffin ran a good open 400 and Cole Galloway competed really well tonight.

“Kody Galloway PR’d with 5-8 in the high jump. I’m very happy for him.”

The Trojans return to the track next Tuesday when they travel to Merrillville to take on the Pirates and LaPorte beginning at 4:30 p.m.
