It wasn’t their best performance, but it was more than good enough.

The Chesterton boys golf team capped its perfect regular season with a six-stroke victory over second place LaPorte in the Duneland Athletic Conference Meet at Sand Creek Country Club on Tuesday.

“It’s great to have had a season like this,” Chesterton coach John Sparks said. “It’s something we’ll always remember, but now we have to focus on one shot at a time.

“We can’t get ahead of ourselves.”

Staying in the moment certainly wasn’t a problem for Chesterton’s Ryan Grassel. The junior took medalist honors with an even par 72 that included a one-under 35 on the Creek Course.

“I tried to just focus on my game and for the team to have a good performance for confidence,” Grassel said. “I was very consistent. I scored well today because I didn’t make any big mistakes. When I missed a green, I got up and down for par.”

“What can you say about Ryan,” Sparks said. “He’s the kind of guy that really comes on in the postseason. I’m really proud of him and impressed with what he did today.”

Only five players in the field shot in the 70’s, including Chesterton’s Pat Herrod with a 79.

“When Pat came in with the 70, I was really impressed,” Sparks said. “He’s really come around and is playing great. He shot a 73 in Palmira and then to come out here and play like that is great.”

Josh Kalita shot an 80, while Kyle Grassel and Nick Stasil fired 83’s to round out the Chesterton scoring.

“Some of the guys didn’t play their best, but were able to get it around in the low 80’s,” Sparks said. “I think some of the guys that didn’t do as well today learned what they need to work on for Friday.

“I think we’ll come out firing.”

The Trojans return to the course on Friday when they participate in the IHSAA Valparaiso Sectional at Forest Park.
